What Is a Breast Lift?
Breast lift (mastopexy) surgery can help St. Louis women who wish to lift and reshape their breasts to appear more youthful and feminine. Breast sagging, also known as ptosis, can be caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, genetics, aging, or a combination of factors. At West County Plastic Surgeons, we perform mastopexy surgery by removing redundant breast skin and lifting the drooping breast tissue to a more youthful position.
Typically, a breast lift for our patients requires an incision around the areola (the pigmented circle surrounding the nipple), as well as a vertical incision from the low point of the areolar circle to the base of the breast. This approach is often called a “keyhole incision.” In some patients, incisions can be limited to a single circle around the areola, but in other cases, the keyhole incision is extended to include a linear component across the base of the breast.

Mastopexy: What You Should Know
SEMINAR 2: MASTOPEXY
Sometimes patients need to decide between a breast augmentation, breast lift or both. Many of our patients choose to combine breast lift with breast augmentation to improve the volume, cup size, and overall contour of their breasts. Larger breast implants can also raise nipple position by 1 to 2 cm, effectively providing a modest lift. A mastopexy procedure is ideal for women who are satisfied with the size of their breasts, but would like them to appear “perkier,” with raised nipples. A combination breast lift plus breast augmentation, also known as an augmentation mastopexy, is best suited for women who want their breasts to look perkier, but with more volume and fullness in the upper pole. In these cases, the lift elevates the tissues, while the breast augmentation utilizes a breast implant that increases size and achieves a certain desired shape.

Anesthesia: A mastopexy or breast lift is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia at our surgical center.
Length of procedure: 90 to 120 minutes.
Estimated recovery time: Patients can return to work 5 to 7 days following surgery. They should avoid vigorous activities for 3 weeks. Visible bruising should dissipate within 2 weeks, and swelling should begin to resolve within 3 weeks.

Associated Procedures to Complement Breast Lift Surgery
Many of our St. Louis patients combine breast lift with the following kinds of procedures to achieve optimal aesthetic results:
- Simultaneous breast augmentation and breast lift (augmentation mastopexy). Some patients may benefit from additional breast volume, tightening of the breast skin, and repositioning of the nipples to a more youthful position. This may be best achieved with both a breast lift and a breast augmentation at the same time, or an augmentation mastopexy. This combination is also particularly common in individuals who may be candidates for an extended abdominoplasty because their weight fluctuations often lead to volume loss and redundant skin of the breasts, abdomen and flanks.
- Liposuction. Removal of fat from the sides, thighs, back, and buttocks with standard tumescent liposuction, ultrasonic-assisted liposuction, or SMART laser-assisted liposuction provides a nice complement to refining the breasts with mastopexy surgery.
- Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). This procedure is best for people who have lost a significant amount of weight and now have loose abdominal skin and lack of abdominal muscle tone. Women who are dissatisfied with their post-pregnancy shape often elect to have a tummy tuck procedure as a part of an overall “mommy makeover.” Our plastic surgeons can combine breast lift and “mommy makeover” procedures safely and effectively.
