Procedures: DIEP Flap
In January 2011, I saw Dr. Myckatyn to determine my prospects for a successful pedicled TRAM breast reconstruction. Because of the breast cancer lumpectomy I had previously undergone elsewhere, I had contracted a staph infection in 2007 and it had been necessary to remove my right breast.
At my visit in January 2011, Dr Myckatyn was very positive that he could reconstruct a new breast for me by using skin and tissue from my abdomen to form a nearly normal-appearing breast on my right side. This procedure is called a DIEP flap, and unlike the TRAM flap would spare my abdominal muscles. He was very thorough in explaining all of it to me and answered all of my questions. He takes time to answer all questions, and the staff is friendly, kind and very courteous.
Because I believe that Dr. Myckatyn is one of the best physicians in this field and I have the utmost confidence in him, I went ahead and had the DIEP flap with him. I could not be more pleased! I am so thankful to have found Dr. Myckatyn to do this surgery on me. My new breast feels and looks like the original breast and the nipple completes the normal appearance. I used to be very self-conscious about my appearance and felt that I would never again feel like a whole woman. After having this surgery, my self confidence has been restored and I actually feel like an attractive woman once again. When I look back on this time and think about the steps that were taken by the doctor and his staff to get me here, I am truly grateful.
When asked, I tell friends about Dr. Myckatyn and his dedicated and amazing staff, and how they go out of their way to help their patients return to full and happy lives following something as traumatic as losing a breast. Because they believed, I believed.
