Lasers and Lights
Shine a Spotlight on Clear, Beautiful Skin in St. Louis
The West County Plastic Surgeons team uses a range of lasers and lights for St. Louis-area women and men seeking everything from restoring a youthful appearance to the skin, to removing hair, to treating unsightly spider veins. Lasers work well as focused approaches to all of these problems and more, while intense pulsed light treats a wide variety of skin disorders. We offer advanced laser and light technologies as they come online and give our patients real choices in how to improve the appearance of their body and skin.
Laser Hair Removal
Unwanted hairs grow back with predictable regularity after every shave, pluck, or waxing session. Anyone tired of the frequent and repetitive cycle can choose laser hair removal as a longer-term solution, since follicles damaged by laser and light energy take much longer to produce hairs again. Even then, the hairs that grow are typically lighter in color and finer in texture, making them less noticeable and easier to remove in the future.
Intense Pulsed Light
IPL is on the "light" side of our laser and light treatments, since it is not a laser, but a broader spectrum of light that moves through the surface of the skin to be absorbed by pigmented cells beneath. This makes it ideal for treating a number of different skin conditions, including pigmentation irregularities, vascular lesions, the redness of rosacea, certain visible veins, and discolored scars. Without harming the surface, intense pulses of light impact darker-pigmented cells for results that unfold in the following weeks: lesions flake away, veins collapse, and skin looks smoother, clearer, and fresher.
Laser Vein Treatment
Spider veins can be dark in color, typically appearing on the face or legs. Laser vein treatments use that dark coloring to their advantage by sending in laser and light energy to be absorbed by the pigmented cells. This creates an increasing amount of heat, which ultimately causes the vein to collapse so that it is no longer visible. Larger veins, such as ropy and potentially painful varicose veins on the legs, require other strategies.
More Laser Services
Other laser services available at West County Plastic Surgeons include fractionated laser resurfacing, which triggers tissue remodeling to reduce wrinkles and the appearance of scars. Traditional ablative lasers remove large areas of the surface, but a fractionated approach—as the name implies—only takes away a fraction of the cells. This makes for a less-intense treatment. As an ablative treatment, CO2 resurfacing is more intense, but also offers more dramatic results. The choice is up to the patient, with the recommended treatment depending on a range of factors, including the ultimate cosmetic goal.
While lasers and lights are all about heat, we also offer treatments on the other end of the temperature spectrum. CryoCorrect also makes use of CO2, but in this case, it is applied to skin tags and unwanted lesions for a mild freeze that creates smoother skin.
