What Are Exosomes?

Growth factors are naturally occurring substances that stimulate wound healing and cell proliferation. Exosomes are extracellular nanoparticles—small particles undetectable by the human eye—or “small carriers” that include growth factors and stimulate cell turnover. These tiny extracellular vesicles that are derived from mesenchymal stem cells contain bioactive proteins, growth factors, and nucleic acids.

As for their role? Put simply, they help the different cells in the body communicate.

Due to aging, skin cells begin to atrophy over time, and just as collagen production declines, fewer exosomes are produced. These therapies help to kickstart inactive skin cells. The treatments can be used after CO2 laser resurfacing, CoolPeel, intense pulsed light (IPL), microneedling, and chemical peels.

How Is This Therapy Used for Hair Restoration?

Scalp inflammation is often a major contributor to hair loss. Exosomes can also help to rejuvenate your hair, restoring it to more youthful fullness and strength. They work by promoting hair follicle regeneration, activating hair stem cells, and encouraging new blood vessel growth for nourishing follicles—plus they have anti- inflammatory properties.

These vesicles in cells can target and repair damaged cells, stimulate hair follicle stem cells, and minimize signs of aging. They are less invasive and less costly compared to traditional approaches to hair restoration, such as hair transplants and topical medications. Treatments for hair loss with these tiny extracellular nanoparticles involve them being injected into the thinning areas of the scalp with tiny needles.

What Are the Benefits of Exosomes?

Exosomes can help to speed up healing time after cosmetic treatments. They are used topically for skin and hair rejuvenation, and—as skincare therapies—have many regenerative, rejuvenating, and restorative abilities. In addition to significantly reducing healing times, they can improve pigmentation-related issues, increase skin firmness, soften lines and wrinkles, provide hydration and nourishment to the skin, and encourage the production of collagen and elastin. The skin eventually becomes plumper, smoother, brighter, and firmer—typically with improvements noticeable within two to six weeks after a treatment. The results are long-lasting as the nanoparticles are continually active for six to eight months after treatment.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Exosomes?

Almost anyone could benefit from exosome therapy, as it has a variety of advantages. Treatments can be ideal for individuals who are seeking to address wrinkles and overall skin rejuvenation. Specific benefits include improvements to skin texture, a dull complexion, acne scars, sagging, fine lines, enlarged pores, and unwanted pigmentation. Many patients begin treatments in their 30s, as this is when the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and exosomes begin to decline and the effects of sun damage and genetics start to show.

Which Other Cosmetic Treatments Rejuvenate the Skin?

West County Plastic Surgeons also offers more aesthetic procedures, including BOTOX®, an injectable neuromodulator that relaxes certain facial muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles. Chemical peels allow more youthful layers of skin beneath the surface to be revealed by removing dead cells and promoting the growth of new cells. Talk to our team to discover what any of these options could do for you.
