Breast Augmentation

The most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the United States is breast augmentation. The St. Louis-based team at West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University notes this fact each year when the American Society of Plastic Surgeons releases the results of its annual survey. The numbers reveal the surgeries and other procedures that member surgeons performed throughout the previous year, from a handful of calf augmentations to millions of applications of BOTOX®.

Breast augmentation routinely lands in the top spot for surgeries, and 2015 was no exception. With 279,143 implant procedures performed over 12 months, it beat out the next most popular procedure—liposuction—by a margin of more than 50,000.

The surgery is also the most popular procedure handled regionally. Breast augmentation topped the Region 2 list (which includes St. Louis and all of Missouri), contributing 47,626 to the national total. The region also includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Behind breast augmentation and liposuction, the next most popular procedures in the United States in 2015 were rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). The Missouri region generally followed the same trends as the rest of the country, though dermabrasion—which gently removes the outermost layers of skin to reveal younger skin beneath—proved more popular than a tummy tuck.
