St. Louis Doctors Explore Breast Augmentation and Fat Grafting

The team at West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University in St. Louis offers breast augmentation with a range of variations to accommodate women of all kinds. Customizable elements of a breast augmentation procedure include incision placement, implant type, implant placement, and more.

Although these choices alone allow for plenty of healthy thought in terms of saline vs. silicone, above the chest muscle vs. below the chest muscle, etc., innovations continue in the field to ensure women continue to get access to options that best suit them from both aesthetic and medical perspectives.

The West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University team has been working with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to study the benefits of fat grafting for breast augmentation resulting in small to moderate increases in volume.

Already in use as a procedure to help with partial breast reconstruction and correct facial creases, fat grafting involves a doctor using liposuction to remove fat from a donor area, processing the fat in a centrifuge, then injecting the fat cells into the area where more volume is desired.

The augmenting possibilities of this procedure are obvious, and, in fact, fat grafting has successfully been used in breast augmentation, most notably in Japan. Given the possibilities and benefits—since the fat used for augmentation is a patient’s own tissue, the body tends to have a very favorable response—studies into the long-term effects of this procedure are generating plenty of interest.
