What’s the Difference Between CoolSculpting®and CoolTone®?

Many patients—women and men alike—are already familiar with CoolSculpting® at our St. Louis-based practice. There is, however, another treatment with a similar name and related goals that can cause some confusion: CoolTone®.

CoolSculpting® and CoolTone® are made by the same manufacturer, and they are quite compatible when it comes to body contouring. That said, they take a different approach and are focused on different results, so it can be helpful to understand the difference between the two.

What Is CoolSculpting®?

Much has already been shared about CoolSculpting® on the West County Plastic Surgeons website and elsewhere, but a little review or refresher never hurts.

CoolSculpting® is a nonsurgical body contouring device that chills targeted areas to rapidly lower their temperature. Fat cells freeze before other cells in the body—such as skin and muscle—so they are cooled until they crystallize, which kills them off. At this point, the body is brought back up to normal temperatures, and natural processes begin clearing out the now-dead fat cells. This results in a gradual—but visible—reduction in volume.

There are applicators that can be applied to just about any areas of the body, from large regions (such as the abdomen) to small pockets (like a double chin).

What Is CoolTone®?

If CoolSculpting® is about reducing, CoolTone® is about building up. Specifically, CoolTone® uses something known as magnetic muscle stimulation to trigger numerous rapid contractions in the targeted area, causing the muscles there to grow stronger and more defined.

Not only can this make the muscles stand out more, but it literally strengthens them, which can help with a weak core and other similar problems.

CoolTone® is FDA approved to shape the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs.

Are Two Better Than One?

Muscles hidden below layers of fat can’t be seen due to the extra padding on top. For this reason, many patients like to pair CoolSculpting® and CoolTone®. The dual strategy of reducing fat and building muscle can alter body contours while improving definition for an especially contoured—and even chiseled—look.
