What Are Dynamic and Static Wrinkles?

When it comes to treating facial wrinkles, Daxxify is a go to at the St. Louis-based West County Plastic Surgeons. While the treatment has proven to be a popular one, many patients curious about what it can do ask whether it’s better for treating certain signs of aging than others.

Like all wrinkle relaxers, Daxxify™ is intended to address only dynamic wrinkles, which are associated with repetitive facial movements. When it comes to other lines, however, a different treatment would be called for.

How can you tell the difference?

First of all, it’s important to note that you don’t have to determine which types of wrinkles you have on your own. If there are signs of aging you would like to address, knowing that is enough. You can come to the West County Plastic Surgeons office and discuss your options with our team. We have the experience and knowhow to assess the look and health of your skin, answer your questions, and then determine which injectable option would be best for you.

That said, there are some basic differences in treatments—and what they can treat—so it can be good to understand the two main approaches when it comes time to explore and consider your options.

As noted above, neuromodulators like Daxxify™ are intended for dynamic wrinkles. Related to motion, these lines develop as muscle contractions happen over and over again. The constant repetition of contractions gradually etches lines deeper into the skin, which means addressing the contractions addresses the problem.

Other signs of aging, however, are not because of facial movements, but because age-related volume loss causes hollows and skin laxity to develop. As collagen and hyaluronic acid levels drop in the skin, the face can take on an aged appearance. The way to address these so-called “static wrinkles”—such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines—is by re-introducing volume where needed.

Dermal fillers are ideal for this, as they can provide volume that is seen right away, or—in the case of injectables known as biostimulators—encourage the production of new collagen to increase volume beneath the surface over time.
